In 1867, an act was passed to raise funding for the bridge and two years later, the design for the Brooklyn Bridge was approved. The same month the plans were approved, roeblings foot was crushed by a ferry and he soon after died of tetanus (Logson 345). His son, washington, took over and ground was broken on the bridge on January 3, 1870 (Logson 346). The main design feature of the bridge were four fifteen-inch diameter steel cables that would support the enormous expanse of the bridge, which was to be over 6000 feet (Switch 22). In order to support those cables, the towers had to be enormous and they had to be sunk to the bedrock below the east river. The method for digging the river bottom was to sink a wooden box using pressurized air and create an elevator wood so that workers could be lowered to the box which was called a caisson. In order to pressurize the air, other gases had to be used which were potentially toxic.

Roebling was born in 1806 in Germany where he trained to be an engineer. He immigrated to the United States in 1831 and after a failed attempt at making a living as plan a farmer in Pennsylvania, he found work as a civil engineer (Logson 342). He originally worked on canals and in the process of designing them, he found that he needed better rope. He came up with a new design and method of creating flexible wire ropes and received a patent for this in 1842 (Logson 342). He quickly found additional uses for the invention, one of which was bridges. He completed his first major bridge in 1855, which was the niagara river Gorge Bridge (Logson 344). After several more successful projects, roebling began to lobby influential people in New York for a bridge he had designed to cross the east river.

There were many factors that made constructing a bridge there difficult, though. The east river was a wide and busy waterway with large ships and was surrounded by a low-lying area. This required that the bridge have a high clearance to enable ships to enter, be longer than any bridge built before it and have a significant curve. For these reasons, the idea for the bridge was continuously put off in favor of ferry services. Brooklyns population continued to swell though, and between 18, it experienced a colossal increase from 266,000 to 396,000 (feuerstein 19). The city of New York at the time consisted only of Manhattan, which had about double the population of Brooklyn. A bridge was seen as a way to relieve overcrowding in Manhattan, while at the same time aid in the expansion of Brooklyn. A man named John roebling came up with the idea for the bridge in 1855 when he became frustrated while waiting for a ferry in 1855 (Logson 341).

The houses were not overhung by their cloud of smoke, and they were spread out endlessly, yet the homework sun shone so brightly, with such a fierce light, that there was even something like the purity of one of natures own grand spectacles (Parker 3). This journal entry does not resemble its corresponding poem as much as the one for i walked Lonely as a cloud, but there is still a lot of his sisters influence on his work. Again, their close house relationship helped him to capture her feelings in his poetry. The poem depicts a vivid scene that is yet another fond memory shared between Wordsworth and his sister. He uses beautiful language and clever literary devices, especially imagery, to make the city come alive before the readers eyes. The passionate picture that the poem paints is a memory that calms and placates.

The Brooklyn Bridges construction is one of the great achievements in United States history and helped pave the way for New York citys rapid expansion in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was an undertaking that required extraordinary effort, sacrifice, and ingenuity by its designers as well as its builders to complete. Its completion was a feat of engineering that was unmatched in its time: it was the longest suspension bridge—the first to use steel-wire—and dominated the new York city skyline as the tallest structure in the western hemisphere (Hiden 476). The idea of a bridge linking Manhattan to Brooklyn was first formalized in a petition to the state legislature in 1802 (feuerstein 24). From the time dutch settlers arrived in Brooklyn in 1636, there had been a need to travel between Manhattan and Brooklyn (feuerstein 98).

Earth is personified in the first line as a being that has possessions that he can show off, for example, its cities. The city is then personified in line four, as a person wearing a fine robe. The sixth line contains the breathtaking imagery of a primitive skyline in a clear, morning sky. The imagery in line eight, All bright and glittering in the smokeless air, calls to mind the image of endless clearness, endless purity. All throughout the poem, wordsworth uses his trademark references to nature, painting the awesome picture in the readers mind. The river is personified in line twelve: The river glideth at his own sweet will, showing a relatedness in the view of the city.

The houses are asleep in line thirteen, a definite personification. The mighty heart is lying still in the last line is hyperbole;e as well as personification: it serves to show that in the tranquility of the city, there cannot be a worry stirring in the heart, only peace. The speaker, again, is Wordsworths sister. She also experienced this vision with him, and wrote about it in her journal. She wrote: It was a beautiful; morning. Pauls, with the river and a multitude of little boats, made a most beautiful sight as we crossed.

I believe this play would not be complete without this character. If Marco would have not existed, it would have left Eddie unpunished and alive, and this would be in conflict with the very conception of drama which drives this works. Wordsworth, the speaker, again, his sister, reflects upon a beautiful view of the city by using such literary devices as rhyme, personification, hyperbole, the and imagery. This poem is another example of Wordsworths desire to create poetry using nature as inspiration.

For example, spitting on Eddies face once he realizes that Eddie turned him and his brother to essay the police is a symbol of disgust and revolt for. In addition, at the end of the play, we are told that. Marco went to church before going to talk to Eddie. This action tells us that Marco is ready to give up his life and commit a mortal sin to defend his honor, because what Eddie has done, the breaking of the "omerta the breaking of trust, is something that in his culture must never. Throughout the first act of the play, marco is only referred as a flat character and the only time we are really aware his persona and his strength is at the end of the first act, when he lifts a chair over his head and. But only in the second act his character is fully exposed and we see his image transform into a round character. In this play, marco is portrayed as the victim, since he hasnt done anything to Eddie but he still gets arrested. In addition, although his brother Rodolpho gets away with it by marrying Catherine, he has no other choice but to go back to his hungry wife and sick children in Italy. These thoughts, and knowing that Eddie has no regrets for what he has done makes him furious, and at the end of the play he seeks revenge.

he is obviously aware of that, but doesnt like to show it in words, or brag about. In fact, when Eddie was making fun of his brother Rodolpho, instead of replying to him in words, he chose to use his strength to get his point across by lifting the chair. In addition, marco doesnt talk about his family much; instead, he works as hard as he can, and that is enough to show everybody how much he cares about them. As a final insult to Eddie, marco chooses to spit in his face in front of everybody. This is because in the Italian culture, that act is considered as an extreme expression of anger toward a person, and it is rarely left without punishment. In addition, the action of going to the church before facing Eddie shows us that he is very religious and cares about his soul. Marco is a very honorable man and believes in his tradition, and the author shows us that through a number of symbols.

He is also very strong and he could easily "load the whole ship by himself. In this play, the author uses plot, dialog, actions and symbolism to emphasize marcos honor which, in my opinion, is his prominent characteristic. Throughout the play, we can clearly see that the plot helps us develop Marcos character in our imagination. For example, he is an illegal alien, and this might give the reader a less honorable view of him, and it might justify Eddies action. But the fact that Marco left his family to give them support and to save his oldest son who is "sick in the chest (pg. 535) makes the reader forget about his illegal stay and makes his status rise to the one of a hero. In this play, marcos actions lead us to the discovery of a violent side which he uses to defend his honor in a number of occasions. For example, when he challenges pdf Eddie to lift the chair at the end of the first act, we understand that he did it to save his brothers face and his familys honor.
